Garage cabinets will help you organize your belongings and keep them out of the way. These two structural categories will point the way towards the best technique. Check out our article 16 BEST SHOES FOR OLDER WOMEN that lists some of our favorite shoes - from casual to dressy. The best way to get started is by taking baby steps.
Keeping these considerations in mind, let’s look at my steps for designing and decorating the Master Bedroom for the EDesign Tribe Concept Contest. Take another look at your teen’s bedroom and ask yourself: does she really need all of those clothes? Then, take a fresh look at your bedding and accessories. Take 15 minutes to go through each closet in your home, making sure you have a clear idea of what’s inside and why you’re keeping it (and if there are items that don’t belong here).
Now look through every last drawer and file cabinet in your office, making sure you haven’t missed anything. Examples include ad breaks on your favourite TV show, loading the dishwasher, making your bed, taking the dog out for a walk, making a meal and so forth. If you have anything left over after passing it along to someone else, make sure you clean out containers and properly dispose of anything that’s broken or in poor condition.
Speaking of how versatile and useful storage baskets are, check out these other ones that are made of tightly hand-woven water hyacinth over a steel frame. Before you begin, think about what you want your space to look like or how you want to use your rooms once your decluttering is over. This is where you will want to use all those clear containers!
Set up an area for kids to donate items they no longer want or need. When I started blogging, my kids made me promise to never show the family’s underwear on the blog. It started as clean clothes that were ready to be put away. I donated a lot, threw away a lot (things that were random pieces of toys, clothes too stained to be worn, etc).
If your teen has a lot of clothing or other items that he doesn’t use on a regular basis (for example, sports equipment), these can be donated to people in need. Sharpen up each “department” by getting rid of anything that doesn’t belong there. Here’s an idea: ask yourself whether any of the items in your bathroom are used enough to warrant having them there. Once the air is sucked out of these bags, you can store items in a fraction of the space.
Another way is to use old cereal boxes or other sturdy cardboard boxes to create dividers in the drawer. What is the way to store clothes in drawers? Anything you don’t like or use can be donated or tossed. Take a second look at her closet and drawers and ask if there are any items that can be donated or tossed-they’ll surely be appreciated by someone else! Are there any that don’t, and if so, can they be donated or tossed?
Take a quick look inside all your cupboards, drawers, and containers to see if there’s anything you no longer need-and if there is, get rid of it. If everything isn’t fitting back inside your cupboards, organize them on shelves or in cabinets elsewhere in the house. Lastly, don’t put everything back at once. Then, you go back later. The first pieces to purge are: anything you haven't worn in a year, stuff that doesn't fit, unstructured pieces (shapeless dresses, bulky sweaters, sweatpants, boxy tops), and any pants/shorts/skirts with thick elastic waistbands.
I recommend storing similar items together, even if they’re not in a specific category-for example, sweaters with sweaters, pants with pants, and so on. For example, do your younger children still have stuffed animals? However, for the average person, you should be able to neatly fit all your clothes in whatever space you have available with the proper organization and some categorizing. Often, after living with fewer clothes it shows you how great a smaller, simplified wardrobe can be!
And you should fold long evening dresses, particularly those weighted with ornamentation, because hanging can distort their shape. Fold the pants lengthwise along the creases to retain the sharpness of the crease while allowing any wrinkles to be released. If you don’t already know the measurements of your closet, then measure it now. The basic process is really very simple: just gather up all your things, put them in boxes or bags for donation or trash, then store what you’re keeping in clearly labeled containers.
One pair of jeans and one pair of lounge pants, along with two to three basic casual shirts and a pair of shoes, is a good starting point for filling up your minimalist closet. If so, can these go in another room instead of their closet? It utilizes vertical space and keeps you from having to shove a huge, bulky laundry bin in your tiny closet. If the laundry isn’t where it belongs-in your washer, dryer, or wherever you are storing dirty clothes before washing them-put everything in its place.
