I’ve had clients feel pressure to roll them exactly like Marie Kondo does, and that’s unnecessary stress - do what works best for you. I've found trying things on and really paying attention to how I look and feel in each item makes a huge difference! For example, if you notice it bugs you in some way when you’re wearing it, doesn’t fit as well as you thought or hoped, doesn’t feel good, or just doesn’t make you feel great when you’re in it, get rid of it!

It will make your shelves look beautiful and will give you easier access to your clothes since each item will be the same shape and size and not buried underneath each other. If you have ample hanging space, I think it’s easier to hang because you can see your options better.

The big pro to hanging is that all of your options are literally in front of your face and you can flip through to find what you want to wear. Floor-length mirrors or mirrored cabinets are crucial in closets - after all, you want to be able to evaluate your outfit! Have you ever thought I really want to wear a white blouse today or a navy sweater would look perfect this pair of pants?
Not only does a well color-coordinated closet look visually appealing, but it’s also very functional. It’s those items with low-quality fabrics that don’t quite fit me correctly simply because it wasn’t made that well. I am slowly curating a wardrobe of items that I love and will wear for years to come. Remember to take this opportunity to clean the wardrobe. Yet, if you just take it to step by step, you will find that while you’re doing the work, it’s not so bad after all.
Make sure you’re committing to rolling them and putting them away in an organized manner. If you’re building it yourself, just create a hollow bench that has a hinged top. When you fold and put items in a drawer, it’s in a stack and you tend to just wear what’s on top and not what’s on the bottom. It took hitting rock bottom for me to realize that something had to change.
For example, one drawer could be nothing but socks and underwear, while the drawer beneath it could be nothing but basketball shorts and sweatpants. Kondo’s feet accessory decree: Never, ever ball up your socks. Getting rid of the unneeded to make your life a little bit simpler. Or perhaps you have big plans to hold on to old prom and bridesmaids dresses to give them new life in a dress-up box one day.
