The bathroom is a perfect example of an easier place where you can start decluttering. In a home, the bedroom is the most neglected place to furnish with the furniture as people don’t visit your bedroom. Mine don’t fit well on my shoe shelves, which is why I put them above the hanging clothes. Folding clothes is the quickest way to pack and is preferred over rolling for items that easily wrinkle such as a cotton button-down shirt or linen.
That would be the wrong way to spend. Bottom Line: Always put your things all the way away when you are done using them. I’ve been using it to get the dust and lint out of my drawers and under my hanging clothes where dirt tends to accumulate. Since I clear space where more hanging clothes could be stored, I use that shelf for jewelry storage. You may also be able to adjust your shelves and rods to better accommodate your space needs.
The shelves behind the door hold snow and rain boots in the top two shelves. There’s a built-in dresser, center island with 12 large cubbies, shoe shelves (and I added more), and additional shelving behind the door. The shoe shelves (where the jeans are) were designed to hold about 50 pairs of shoes and, several years ago, I had that many, and more. And, in fact, I do have one of these in my makeup drawer and they’re perfect for organizing compacts and blushes.
And, to make the most of the vertical space, I hang my hats with a thumbtack! Aside from adding some aesthetic appeal, it makes your closet more functional for a small space, since the doors won’t swing out. A view of a small dresser would be a “chest of drawers.”What is another name for a lingerie chest? I do my makeup here since the lighting is good and there’s a big mirror by the dresser.
I worked on making the shelving above the dresser prettier by choosing a soothing color palette of pink tones and adding in some of my favorite books and accessories. I organize my hanging clothes by type of item, then by color. I knew this was Closet Organizing 101-and yet by letting my closet go day after day, I had failed to realize the obvious: It was February, and I still hadn't stored my summer clothes.
I’ve organized and reorganized my closet over the years, but this is by far my favorite reiteration to date. I’ve been fond of these thin velvet hangers because they double the room inside your closet! What’s left are things I love, use, and/or wear and it makes me so happy to walk into this space and have room to breathe. If you think you'll be able to wear things that are just a bit tight now and really love them, keep them!
But now, I don’t have as many shoes, and I keep the ones I wear most often in my sitting room because it’s easy to try them on and off when I’m doing Dressing Room posts. The lid will hide the mess but be easy for you to open and grab what you need.
It’s easy to pull open the drawer and see everything I need at a glance and the dividers keep everything organized. You don’t need 20 plastic lids or 20 old t-shirts. The simple examples are noughts and crosses, battleships, crosswords, search the word, and other old classics. Those Madame Chic books are really good and I’ve reread them many times.
I’ve narrowed these down to my very faves! My Tory Burch and Rebecca Minkoff bags are among my faves and looked great here. This gold jar came with a Tory Burch candle I bought many, many years ago. I’ve used this wooden tie rack as a hanger for my necklaces for years! Since I last shared my closet in January 2018, I’ve donated so many things and have also streamlined the things I keep.
I keep all my makeup in the top drawer. PRO TIP: In retrospect, I would have loved this island to have a clear top with shallow drawers that I could store my jewelry and sunglasses. On the top shelf are decorative pale pink boxes that I used to fill in the space. I like to keep a few photos in this space just for that personal touch.
Acrylic boxes help keep your jewelry contained dust free. It looks pretty and the handy acrylic holder doesn’t fit inside the drawers. Here’s another acrylic organizer that said it was intended to hold makeup. That’s why a hanging organizer like this one can come in handy. I come prepared with a plan for how the closet should be organized, and after the initial discussions, we dive into the heavy work together.
